Grant Spotlight: National History Day

Washington Township Schools believes that to empower our students to build a better future, we must first help them gain a deeper understanding of the past. For middle school students, that deeper understanding begins with National History Day.

A nationwide competition for students in grades 6 and up, National History Day is to social studies what the Science Fair is to science class – an opportunity for students to do a self-guided deep dive into a topic of their choice. After months of research and preparation, students present their conclusions and evidence through papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries, or websites, moving through a series of contest levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators.

National History Day is built into the 7th and 8th grade curriculum for ALL Washington Township middle schools. For months, middle schoolers throughout the District are all working toward the same goal. This gave Mr. Melrose and the other social studies teachers an idea: a District-wide showcase of the middle school National History Day projects.
