The 1970s was a time of significant social change in the United States, with a strong focus on civil rights and racial equality. The establishment of Black Student Unions (BSUs) in high schools nationwide was a direct response to this movement. In 1974, students saw the intense value such an organization could bring to address the unique experiences and challenges faced by Black students and to create a sense of community and support among the increasingly diverse population at North Central. Their vision took hold and the NCHS Black Student Union continues as one of the longest-lasting organizations at North Central. In honor of their 55-year reunion, the North Central Class of 1969 has chosen to direct excess reunion funds to support the special college exploration initiatives of the North Central High School Black Student Union.
One of the most impactful activities undertaken by our BSU are travel opportunities for juniors and seniors to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These trips are invaluable in expanding a student’s understanding of what higher education can look like. Before the Pandemic, approximately 80-90% of trip attendees applied and were accepted to HBCUs with many being offered financial assistance.
This October, the BSU will travel to Nashville, TN on its first HBCU campus visit since 2019, before the pandemic. In honor of fifty-five years since your graduation, the 1969 class reunion organizers invite you to join them in raising funds for a class gift supporting the HBCU visit experience. Gifts will be utilized to offset the trip expenses and provide scholarships; making the opportunity more accessible. Excess funds will be used for future trips as the club hopes to take students to Alabama and Georgia in the spring.
Your contribution, big or small, will make a difference. Please join in contributing to this important gift. Gifts can also be made in honor or memory of someone, such as an unforgettable teacher or a treasured classmate.
