As the lights dim and anticipation mounts for this year’s Indy Fringe Theatre Festival, one of our very own Panthers will be among the talented lineup! With a creative journey that began at NCHS, Kate Duffy Sim has continued to hone her craft and passions in the development of her theater company, Clerical Error Productions.
Q&A
What are you up to now?
After retiring from a 35-year career in education, I went back to my true love, theatre. In 2018, friends and I created Clerical Error Productions, Inc., a local theatre troupe and 501 (c)(3) and Indiana not-for-profit. We’ve been in business for six years, and have been in the IndyFringe festival every year since our creation. Look for us this year in Curses! Soiled Again! We perform vaudeville, original comedy, and works with Irish themes. Last year, I played Winnie in our production of Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, my most challenging role to date. Currently, I am performing locally as Katharine Hepburn in productions with a full cast and in a stand-alone, one-woman show titled Fascinating.
How did North Central impact and shape who you are today?
My father, Dr. James Duffy, taught English at North Central from the late ’50s until his death in 1976. It was always my second home growing up, and I taught journalism and acted as publications advisor in the ’90s. I believe I received the best education available in the state of Indiana when I was a student there, and I will always be Panther Proud.
WHAT IS your favorite memory from North Central?
My favorite memories are associated with the performing arts. I made lifelong friends in Descants, and found authentic self-expression performing in school plays and with the Repertory Theatre Company. I will never forget standing in circle before a show and Mr. Lord quoting his favorite line from Harvey and wishing us all a pleasant evening.
