Amy McGhehey Nash

NCHS CLASS OF 1993

As we celebrate Veterans Day, we are especially proud to highlight Amy Nash, whose service as a military veteran expands decades. Amy’s journey from North Central to a career with the United States Army is a powerful reminder of the remarkable impact our graduates make both in and out of uniform.

Q&A

What are you up to now?

After graduating North Central in 1993, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University. Upon graduation in 1997, I joined the United States Army and served the entirety of my career in the branch of Military Intelligence with positions from a Russian and Serbian/Croatian linguist, to analyst, and finally an Intelligence planner. I retired from the U.S. Army as of February 2019, and now work as a contractor that assists in certifying military units for deployments. I have one daughter who is a senior in high school, with that being my current focus. I travel often, celebrate the little things, and I am grateful for the opportunities that have been presented to me along the way.

How did North Central impact and shape who you are today?

To simplify how North Central impacted and shaped me, if I could pick just one item, it would be languages. I studied French and Mandarin Chinese at North Central. Chinese still is seldom offered in High Schools across the nation. That exposure allowed me to study at IU with an advantage, and when offered the opportunity to learn Russian, Serbian and Croatian languages in the Army, I knew I could learn them with minimal difficulty because of my early exposure to learning complex languages at NCHS.

WHAT IS your favorite memory from North Central?

The people. Specifically Catherine Creek. We met the summer of 1989 before Freshman year started, and have been friends ever since that summer!

But another favorite memory isn’t even from my time as a student — it’s from April 2024 at Living History Day. To be invited back as a graduate AND a veteran, I was able to feel the encouragement for military service that I hadn’t realized was there when I was a student. It was humbling to return and realize I had much more in common with my peers than I realized at the time.
