VALERIE (MOSS) Gathers

NCHS CLASS OF 1998

Dr. Valerie Gathers, NCHS Class of 1998, credits much of her path to medicine to the impactful teachers and creative learning environment she experienced at North Central High School. Now a dedicated OB/GYN serving Central Indiana, she finds deep meaning in caring for Washington Township students, teachers, and even former classmates. Her story is a full-circle example of how a strong educational foundation and inspiring educators can shape a lifelong calling.

Q&A

What are you up to now?

I’ve been practicing as an OB/GYN for the past 13 years, serving the central Indiana community throughout my entire career. It’s been especially meaningful to care for Washington Township teachers, students, and even some classmates from my time at North Central.

I currently live in Fishers with my husband and our two children, Max and Mackenzie. We attend Heartland Church and are very active at St. Richards Episcopal school, where our children attend.

How did North Central impact and shape who you are today?

Without a doubt, it was the teachers at North Central who had the greatest impact on me. They were all amazing, but there is one that stands out from the beginning of my freshman year. In ninth grade, I had Mrs. Roberta Patrick for Biology. At the time, I was shy and quiet, but she encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone—getting involved in science fair projects and participating more actively in class.

Mrs. Patrick’s support was truly pivotal. It helped me find my voice and build the confidence that ultimately shaped my path toward medicine. Her influence was so meaningful that when I graduated from medical school, I invited her to speak at my graduation. That moment was a full-circle testament to the lasting impact of a great teacher.

WHAT IS your favorite memory from North Central?

One of the highlights of my time at North Central was participating in the Learning Unlimited program. My sister had been in the program prior to me, so it was especially meaningful to share many of the same teachers and experiences.

Learning Unlimited was known for its innovative, arts- and humanities-based curriculum and its nontraditional approach to learning. With small class sizes and a collaborative atmosphere, we called our teachers by their first names and often engaged in group discussions while sitting on desks rather than behind them. The environment encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and meaningful dialogue.

Beyond the classroom, the program brought learning to life. A memorable experience was our trip to the Art Institute of Chicago, which opened my eyes to studying art and culture in a completely new way.

I’m not sure if Learning Unlimited still exists today, but it was an incredibly formative part of my high school journey. Its emphasis on creative thinking, close student-teacher relationships, and immersive learning played a big role in shaping who I am today.
