NCHS CLASS OF 2005

In celebration of HBCU Week, we are proud to shine a spotlight on four of our alumni who chose Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Their experiences reflect the lasting impact of HBCUs in shaping leaders, building community, and carrying forward a legacy of excellence and pride. Our fourth featured alum is Jameka Burns.

Q&A

Jameka Burns

WHICH HBCU DID YOU ATTEND and how did it shape your career path?

I attended Tennessee State University from 2005-2010 and Florida A&M from 2010-2012. My HBCUs prepared me for my career through their network and relationships. I now work as a Sr. Operations Manager.

How did North Central prepare you for the HBCU experience?

The small class sizes and college prep curriculum helped prepare me to be successful in college and at my HBCU. I also found quite a few Panther connections at my HBCU and at other HBCUs.

What is your favorite NCHS memory?

Being at football games and yelling your class chant!

What is your favorite HBCU Tradition?

Going back to homecoming every year and seeing friends from college. The HBCU homecoming experience is an annual tradition at any HBCU. It’s even greater to attend as an Alumni.

What advice would you give current North Central students considering an HBCU?

Do it! It’s an experience like no other you’ve experienced. HBCUs have so much history and culture. Also, although HBCUs have their rivalry; the HBCUs community is strong and large. HBCU > everyone!
