What are you up to now?

I am the author of the novels Above the Fire, a #1 Amazon bestseller, and Concert Black, which comes out this spring. The new novel tells the story of a biographer who wishes to write the life of an eminent conductor. He tries to stop her to preserve a decades-old secret. I also contribute essays and criticism to such publications as the New York Times, the Atlantic Monthly, the Wall Street Journal, and the Economist.

How did North Central Shape who you are today?

My junior-year English class, with Mrs. Mifflin, and my junior-year U.S. History class, with Mr. Ball, both helped me develop my love of reading and writing.

WHAT IS your favorite memory from North Central?

Competing with friends to earn a spot on Mr. Russell’s top-10 list for Advanced Biology quizzes
