NCHS CLASS OF 1979

Hey Teachers! The next time you’re shopping for classroom supplies, don’t be surprised if you see a familiar face ready to lend a helping hand.

We are proud to spotlight Art Kodroff, a North Central High School alum who serves on the board of Teachers’ Treasures and is especially excited about the new Teachers’ Treasures store location that recently opened at the Washington Township Services Center. Even better, he’s not just involved behind the scenes. You’ll often find Art volunteering in the store itself!

Q&A

What are you up to now?

I recently retired after a career as an accountant. It’s been just a few months, so I’m still getting used to it, but I have a long list of things that I want to do and places to goI’ve done some travelling and plan to do more, as well as spend more time with family and friends and increase the amount of volunteering that I’ve been doing.

How and why did you get involved with Teachers Treasures?

I participated in a Lacy Leadership program that encouraged me to get more involved in non-profits in Indianapolis and as a way to give back Teachers’ Treasures was looking for board members with financial management expertise and I really liked their mission of providing school supplies for free to teachers. After visiting their store and meeting with the Executive Director and other board members, I was asked to join and have been on the board now for 18 yearsWhen I first got involved, they were a small non-profit and hadn’t been around very long, so it’s been great to see the growth in the program and increase in the number of teachers and schools served.

WHAT IS your favorite memory from North Central?

I have 2 favorite memories that stand out. My history teacher as a junior and a senior, Tom Doney, was an outstanding teacher who cared a lot about his students and made learning about history and current events funHe ran for the Indiana State Senate and I worked on his campaign.

My senior year, the boys basketball team was one of the top teams in the state and won the sectional, regional, and fell just short of getting to the final four, losing in the semi-state championship gameThose games were played at Hinkle Fieldhouse before there was class basketball in Indianaand it was very exciting.
