Lauren Weedman
Emmy Nominee Lauren Weedman

NCHS CLASS OF 1987

We caught up with North Central grad and recent Emmy nominee Lauren Weedman as she navigates two very different realities. Weedman currently splits her time between Indiana, where she cares for her mother who is living with dementia, and the fast-paced world of Los Angeles, where she stars in HBO’s acclaimed series Hacks. It’s a rare moment of reflection amid a life shaped by both extraordinary success and profound personal challenges.

Q&A

What are you up to now?

Parenting my teen son Leo (single mom) and painting. And prepping to teach a Solo Theater workshop. And auditioning. And trying to take in the reality that I’m now an Emmy Nominee – maybe winner – but either way, a big life perk.

How did your time at North Central shape who you are today?

Oh my gah. It was huge. If there had not been a Theater Rep class lead by Phil Lineback, and Counterpoints led by Bob Critzer, I would not have had the support to believe that I should take a leap that is a risky one and continue with the arts.

It was in Phil Lineback’s class that I wrote my first comedic monologue. He was the first who treated what I loved doing with respect and support. Mr. Critzer was the same. His death from AIDS my junior year was also deeply impacting.

WHAT IS your favorite memory from North Central?

Sitting in the parking lot in my giant Malibu Classic (white leather seats, ya’ll) listening to U2 and feeling all deep and cool. Also, I loved how all the theater kids gathered in F165 before school started. It felt so safe there to be the weirdos we were/are.

AND being a part of Learning Unlimited (a unique program no longer offered today) — we got to drink coffee and talk to the teachers, almost like peers. I remember being told in LU that Kurt Vonnegut was going to be coming to speak at NC and we were urged to go…and I didn’t go. THAT’S A REGRET!
