Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey

NCHS Class of 1982

North Central High School and the Washington Township Schools Foundation proudly celebrate the induction of Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey into the North Central High School Alumni Hall of Fame, recognizing her remarkable achievements and lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and the arts.

Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey’s journey began when her family moved to Indianapolis from Springfield, Illinois, during her sophomore year. Though starting at a new school was daunting, she quickly found her home in the performing arts participating in King’s Court, Descants, Counterpoints, and Junior Spectacular. Her dedication to excellence was evident early on, as she worked tirelessly to earn a spot in the prestigious Counterpoints, breaking barriers as one of the few students of color in the ensemble. These experiences instilled in her the values of perseverance, collaboration, and professionalism—qualities that would shape her distinguished career.

After graduating from North Central, Dr. Whitt Bailey earned her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University’s Douglass College, where she honed her leadership skills while double majoring in Dance Education and Communications. She went on to earn a master’s degree from UCLA in Dance Education and later obtained her Doctorate in Ministry from Newburgh Theological Seminary.

A passionate advocate for nonprofit leadership and the arts, Dr. Whitt Bailey currently serves as the President and CEO of the Cancer Support Community Indiana, where she leads efforts to provide vital free services such as counseling, massage therapy, cooking for wellness, and yoga to cancer patients, regardless of income or diagnosis. Her deep commitment to community engagement is evident through her involvement on numerous boards, including Asante Arts Institute, the American Pianists Awards, Indianapolis Ballet, IU Health East Region, Meridian Health Services, Ladies Under Construction, and the Indy Black Chamber. She is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a two-time Hall of Fame inductee, having also been honored by Rutgers University.

Reflecting on this honor, Dr. Whitt Bailey expressed gratitude for the foundation North Central provided, preparing her to excel in professional settings where she was often the only person of color in the room. She credits the school’s diverse and dynamic environment with shaping her confidence and leadership abilities, lessons she continues to share with others today.

Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey’s induction into the Hall of Fame is a reflection of her dedication to uplifting others, breaking barriers, and making a lasting impact in her community. North Central is proud to celebrate her legacy and the profound influence she continues to have both locally and nationally.
