Their experiences reflect the lasting impact of HBCUs in shaping leaders, building community, and carrying forward a legacy of excellence and pride. Our first featured alum is Tiara Derrick.
Q&A
WHICH HBCU DID YOU ATTEND and how did it shape your career path?
I attended Texas Southern University from 2006-2012 and 2015-2016. My HBCU prepared me for my career by giving me strong research skills and the confidence to apply them beyond traditional healthcare settings. The exposure I gained through my coursework and projects showed me that my degree could open doors in multiple industries, not just in healthcare, and helped me develop the adaptability to explore those opportunities. I now work in Clinical Research.
How did North Central prepare you for the HBCU experience?
My high school experience taught me how to be resourceful and seek out opportunities on my own. That independence helped me navigate the transition to my HBCU, where I was able to take ownership of my learning and get involved in meaningful research and campus activities. My favorite NCHS memory was participating in NOBCCHE and being able to travel to compete in the science bowl!
What advice would you give current North Central students considering an HBCU?
If you are interested in attending an HBCU, start by researching schools that match your goals and values. Keep your grades up, take the SAT or ACT seriously, and get involved in activities that show leadership and service. Apply for scholarships early and often because HBCUs offer many opportunities to support their students. Most importantly, visit campuses if you can and connect with alumni or current students to learn about the culture and community. Preparation and networking will open doors and make the transition smoother.
